God and Sinner Reconciled, The True Peace Announced at Christmas

In the hymn Hark the Herald Angels Sing, the line "God and sinner reconciled" captures the heart of the gospel. Humanity is separated from God because of sin, unable to repair the relationship. Yet in His mercy, God sent His Son to bear the punishment we deserved. God is love, and He is also holy and just. The angels' announcement of peace in Luke 2:14 proclaims true peace with God — a peace made possible through Christ's atoning death, where hostility was removed without compromising God's holiness. As Paul explains in 2 Corinthians 5:18–19, reconciliation is God's gracious work through Christ. The hymn wisely uses the singular word "sinner" to make the message personal. Reconciliation is offered to each sinner who repents and believes. Romans 5:1 declares, "Since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ." May this message call us to turn from sin and rest in Christ alone, the only One who brings forgiveness, reconciliation, and true peace with the Father.
