She serves as a senior fellow in the Strobe Talbott Center for Security, Strategy, and Technology within the Foreign Policy program at Brookings. She is also the director of the Initiative on Nonstate Armed Actors and co-director of the Africa Security Initiative, as well as the Brookings series on opioids, The Opioid Crisis in America: Domestic and International Dimensions. As an author, her books include The Extinction Market: Wildlife Trafficking and How to Counter It, Narco Noir: Mexico’s Cartels, Cops, and Corruption, and Militants, Criminals, and Warlords: The Challenge of Local Governance in an Age of Disorder. In addition, she hosts The Killing Drugs Podcast.
