For years, affluent residents living in the multi-million dollar apartments of the nearby "Toaster" building have successfully lobbied for strict 102-decibel noise limits and a sharp 10:00 PM curfew. Today, those restrictions are history.
Reporting live from Sydney Harbour, Today show reporter Jack Hahn breaks down the major operational shake-up. Under the expansive new laws, the strict noise limits and concert caps have been completely abolished, meaning live music could potentially echo across the forecourt every single night of the week. Furthermore, the maximum crowd capacity for the steps of the Opera House has been bumped up by an additional 1,000 music fans, allowing up to 7,000 people to jam out simultaneously.
In a significant cultural victory, historical events are also receiving an extension; traditional Anzac Day dawn services will no longer have to wait until 6:00 AM, allowing moving commemorative events to commence as early as 3:30 AM on the historic steps.
