Captured in a dramatic operation, the 56-year-old now faces the prospect of justice over the fatal 1999 stabbing murder of Sydney father-of-two, George Giannopoulos.
Reporting live from outside the Greek prison in Aigio, Europe Correspondent Josh Bavas outlines the massive challenges ahead. Police allege that Dalamangas had been actively hidden by relatives for years whilst being the target of an intense Interpol red alert. In a shocking twist, the fugitive was arrested alongside his partner and father after a tip-off sparked tactical surveillance, putting an end to his 27 years in hiding using falsified passports.
However, the Australian Federal Police (AFP) and New South Wales Police face an uphill legal battle to bring him home. As former NSW Police Detective Peter Moroney explains, Greece enforces a 25-year statute of limitations for murder prosecutions. Because 27 years have elapsed since the tragic death of George Giannopoulos at a Sydney venue, defence lawyers are expected to aggressively fight the bilateral extradition treaty.
While the Giannopoulos family expresses renewed hope that justice may finally be within reach, legal experts warn the complex extradition process could take up to two years if Dalamangas continues to protest his innocence.
