6:01Now PlayingIn this extensive Nine News sports update, the focus shifts to Melbourne as the city prepares for a massive weekend of elite Australian sport. Ahead of a crucial State of Origin Game 2 encounter at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), a staggering crowd of over 90,000 spectators is expected to pack the stadium. Reporters Trent Kniese and Owen Leonard deliver the final updates from both camps. Queensland Maroons coach Billy Slater and team captain Cameron Munster discuss their squad's preparedness, noting the deep historical connections with the Melbourne Storm. New South Wales Blues coach Laurie Daley makes his ambitions clear, intending to wrap up the series after the Blues' strong victory in Game 1. Both teams have been training intensely, with the Blues swapping code secrets during a session at AAMI Park.
Meanwhile, the dynamic changes in the AFL are causing serious ripples across the league. Collingwood Magpies stars Josh Daicos and Harry Perryman were seen lending a hand to Melbourne’s vulnerable community at the Magpies Nest. In football terms, the Pies find themselves in a challenging position, sitting 13th on the ladder. They are desperately seeking to recreate their trademark late-game comebacks under the guidance of skipper Darcy Moore, who is returning from injury treatment in the United States.
Further complicating the AFL landscape, North Melbourne forward Paul Curtis has had his three-week suspension upheld at the tribunal for a dangerous tackle on West Coast Eagle Hamish Davis. Elsewhere, the top-four Melbourne Demons are gearing up for a tough clash against Adelaide, with stand-in coach Steven King praising the impact of elite players like Kozzie Pickett and the guidance of former star Nathan Jones. With critical matches ahead, this weekend represents a massive tipping point for teams across both rugby league and Australian rules football.
