Derek Chauvin evoked his Fifth Amendment right to not testify in his own defense. Chauvin informed Judge Peter Cahill of his decision by way of a question-and-answer exchange with his attorney, Eric Nelson.
The state recalled pulmonologist Dr. Martin Tobin as a rebuttal witness, to address testimony from a defense witness about the alleged presence of carbon monoxide in George Floyd’s bloodstream from a running squad car, and to interpret the size of Floyd’s heart.
Testimony concluded and closing arguments will be on Monday, April 19.
Chauvin faces three charges, second-degree murder, second-degree manslaughter and third-degree murder in the death of George Floyd, who died in police custody in May 2020.
