7:59:25Now PlayingThe jury in the Derek Chauvin trial is hearing closing arguments from both the state and defense attorney Eric Nelson before starting deliberations in the trial of the former officer, charged with causing the death of George Floyd.
Assistant state prosecutor Steve Schleicher opened closings by painting a human portrait of Floyd, describing how he struggled to get off the pavement and breathe while Chauvin kneeled on his neck and disregarded his pleas. "No courage was required... all that was required was a little bit of compassion, and none was shown on that day," Schleicher told jurors.
Defense attorney Eric Nelson began his closing argument by thanking jurors for enduring hardships that go along with a long trial, then reminded them that he does not need to prove his client's innocence. Nelson asserted Chauvin is presumed innocent until proven guilty, and intimated that the state has failed to show "clear and convincing" evidence.
Chauvin faces three charges, second-degree murder, second-degree manslaughter and third-degree murder in the death of George Floyd, who died in police custody in May 2020.
