The sky over Sioux Falls, South Dakota turned an ominous green Tuesday, just before severe weather slammed the area.
The storms toppled trucks and knocked out power to thousands of homes. Officials asked residents to shelter in place and watch out for falling trees and blowing debris. They also advised people to avoid traveling as vehicles were left trapped in flooded intersections amid downed power lines.
According to Accuweather, green skies often accompany severe weather. It's not entirely clear why but some scientists believe if a thunderstorm coincides with ambient red light, like a sunset, airborne water particles can bend the light so it appears green.
