Kevin Dizmang's ex-wife called 911 requesting a mental health check when he became panicked and manic. A Colorado Springs police officer, mental health clinician and civilian paramedic responded to that call.
On body camera footage of the incident, you see Dizmang briefly run from an officer trying to cuff him before he is taken down by the paramedic. Dizmang went limp and would later be pronounced dead.
Later, body camera footage shows the paramedic joking about the tackle at the hospital while staff is working to revive Dizmang.
An autopsy ruled his death was related to cardiopulmonary arrest in the setting of physical restraint, acute methamphetamine intoxication and some pre-existing medical conditions.
An expert on use of force said seeing that type of response from a civilian paramedic on a crisis team is highly unusual.
