0:58Now PlayingFigure skater Andrew Torgashev shares the unique story of how he got into skating in this clip. Born to Soviet immigrant parents who came to America around 1995, his parents built their lives as figure skating coaches—the only profession they really knew.
With his parents coaching 12 hours a day, young Andrew had two choices: stay at the rink or stay home with the babysitter—a former Soviet school teacher. The decision was easy. Rather than learning math and Russian with a strict former Soviet educator, Andrew chose to become a "rink rat" and figure out how to skate.
Andrew jokes that his parents claim they never pushed him into the sport, but the circumstances certainly made the choice clear! This lighthearted story reveals how environment and family shaped his path to becoming an elite figure skater pursuing Olympic dreams.
