As one of the youngest disciplines in winter sports, freestyle skiing is perpetually going up and up and up—which makes keeping pace incredibly difficult.
The key? You have to truly love it. You spend so much time on snow that if you don't love skiing, you won't want to ski enough to stay good at it. For Alex, it's been a natural progression throughout his career, staying in the flow without overthinking it. But you're always figuring out the next trick, putting a twist on things, determining what you could do better, and planning what moves to work on for next year. When you love the sport enough, that progression comes naturally.
Being the inventor of new tricks is the hardest part of the game. People will follow once you come up with something, but creating that original trick is always the toughest challenge. Alex has done it a couple of times, and inevitably everyone says "yeah, I'm gonna try that." But he sees it as a compliment—people want to follow in your footsteps.
The secret to getting others to follow? Make something look fun. If you make it look fun, competitors will want to try it and you'll inspire kids around the world to attempt it. Trying something new, making it look fresh, and having fun doing it—that's how you get people following you and pushing the sport forward together.
