About "After the Fall":
On March 26, 1976, an unraveling wire on Vail ski area’s Lionshead gondola unleashed a tragedy – two cars, each carrying six people, plunged 125 feet and crashed into the mountainside.
It was the deadliest lift accident in the history of skiing in Colorado. Three of the people in those cars died on impact, and a fourth lost his life two days later as a result of injuries suffered in the accident. Eight people were badly hurt.
Fifty years later, three survivors remain. For the first time, each agreed to tell the story of that day and the ways it affected them – and affects them still.
As part of their project "After the Fall," 9NEWS Investigates reporter Kevin Vaughan and photojournalist Tom Cole found and digitized nine 9NEWS reports from the accident and its aftermath.
