0:51Now PlayingIf you've ever tried to survive a 10-hour flight in economy with a toddler on your lap, United Airlines has some very good news for you.
The Chicago-based carrier announced the launch of the United Relax Row, a dedicated row of three economy seats that can transform into a lie-flat, couch-like sleeping space once you're in the air.
The Relax Row is a standard three-seat configuration in the United Economy cabin — with a twist. Each seat comes equipped with individually adjustable leg rests that fold up at a 90-degree angle, effectively converting the row into a flat surface where passengers can stretch out, sleep or snuggle up with the kids.
Passengers booking the Relax Row will also receive a custom-fitted mattress pad, a specially sized blanket, two extra pillows and, for families traveling with little ones, a plush stuffed animal and a Children's Travel Kit.
United is marketing the Relax Row toward families with small children, couples who want to share a more comfortable space, and solo travelers willing to book all three seats for the ultimate economy upgrade.
"Customers traveling in United Economy on long-haul flights deserve an option for more space and comfort, and this is one way we can deliver that for them," said Andrew Nocella, United's Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer, in the announcement.
Each plane will offer up to 12 Relax Row sections, so availability will be limited. United also isn't sharing price details until closer to when it actually becomes available next year.
United says the Relax Row is expected to launch in 2027, with a broader rollout planned across more than 200 Boeing 787 and 777 widebody aircraft by 2030.
United says it's the first North American airline to offer this type of seating and holds exclusive rights to the design, so customers aren't likely to see this option on another airline anytime soon.
Part of a bigger family-friendly push
The Relax Row is the splashiest announcement, but it's part of a larger effort by United to court family travelers. The airline already offers free family seating, addressing a growing complaint among family travelers, offering a dynamic seat map that automatically places children under 12 next to an adult in their party at no extra charge. United also offers dedicated kids' meals on select flights, family-friendly inflight entertainment, and a Children's Travel Kit developed in partnership with Sesame Street.
