Winds pick up at Coors Field ahead of Rockies' home opener

Wind and mountain snow are the big stories in Colorado on Friday. Expect dry, cool and blustery conditions for Denver and the eastern part of the state, with the mountains getting snow, mainly Friday morning.

Colorado Rockies fans heading to Coors Field for Friday's home opener should brace for gusty conditions, with winds forecast to reach 30 to 40 mph — particularly in the hours leading up to and during the first half of the game.

Temperatures are expected to sit in the low to mid-50s, but the wind will make it feel considerably colder. Fans are advised to dress in layers, including a hoodie or jacket, and opt for longer pants rather than counting on the mild-looking temperature readings on weather apps.

"You'd probably go, maybe I can get away with a short sleeves t-shirt," said 9NEWS Weather Impact Team meteorologist Chris Bianchi. "You're gonna want to have the hoodie, the jacket, the longer pants, the jeans, that sort of thing."

The good news: an earlier threat of rain or snow has diminished, as the storm system tracking through the region is passing too far north to impact Denver. Mountain areas, however, will see snowfall.
