Fancy, an American Quarter Horse living at a retirement farm, was officially recognized by Guinness World Records in February as the oldest living horse in the world. On Wednesday, she celebrated her 38th birthday — a milestone she shares with her lifelong owner, Paige Blumer, who turned 34 the same day.
Blumer has owned Fancy since she was 8 years old, forming a bond that has lasted nearly three decades.
“I told my mom that I thought she was just too fancy to have such an ugly name,” Blumer said, recalling the horse’s original registered name, Tracies Lil Kelberg. “My mom went, ‘Well, let’s call her Fancy,’ and it stuck ever since.”
The typical lifespan for an American Quarter Horse ranges from 25 to 35 years. Fancy has surpassed that average while overcoming health complications common in older horses. Despite her age, those who care for her say she still has a spirited personality.
“She’s a big diva,” Blumer said. “She is very strong-willed and you can’t tell her what to do. I think that’s why she’s lived as long as she has.”
