as posted by the channelThe U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced Tuesday that it has added bemotrizinol to the list of permitted active ingredients for over-the-counter sunscreen products, marking the first addition of a new sunscreen active ingredient to the agency's sunscreen monograph since the late 1990s.
According to the FDA, bemotrizinol protects against both ultraviolet A (UVA) and ultraviolet B (UVB) rays. The agency said the ingredient has low levels of absorption through the skin and is considered generally recognized as safe and effective for use in sunscreens by adults and children ages 6 months and older.
