7:25Now PlayingThree firefighters were killed and two others were injured while battling a wildfire on the Colorado-Utah border Saturday. The Snyder Fire, burning in Mesa County, is one of three burning on the Western Slope. The fire, which started in Utah and crossed the border into Colorado Saturday, is estimated at more than 28,000 acres.
On Sunday, the U.S. Wildland Fire Service reported that three firefighters died and two were injured while tackling the fire. That happened on Saturday when the fire burned over the crewmembers and fire shelters that were deployed.
“I’m devastated about the loss of three heroic firefighters who died in the line of duty in Western Colorado," Colorado Gov. Jared Polis said in a statement. "The men and women who serve on the front lines of these fires risk their lives to keep us safe and to protect the lands and communities we love. To the loved ones of those lost, and to their fellow crew members - some who are still battling the flames – know that the State of Colorado mourns alongside you. The State is working closely with the Bureau of Land Management and local officials and firefighters to deploy any and all resources needed to fight these fires, including the Colorado National Guard, and to recover the three firefighters who were lost. I am receiving continuous updates from my public safety team."
Polis has declared disaster emergencies in response to the Snyder Fire and the Gold Mountain Fire, which is burning in Ouray County.
