0:41Now PlayingThe eastbound lanes of Interstate 70 have reopened following a pursuit and crash Tuesday morning at the Eisenhower Tunnel in the mountains west of Denver. Colorado State Patrol (CSP) said it responded to I-70 eastbound near milepost 221, west of Georgetown, for a report of a crash involving a semi, around 3:15 a.m. Tuesday.
CSP said its initial investigation showed the driver of a Mitsubishi Endeavor was contacted by the Idaho Springs Police Department, in the town of Idaho Springs, for a possible theft. The driver took off in the Endeavor, fleeing from the officer, and Idaho Springs lost sight of the vehicle, CSP said.
The driver entered I-70 going westbound in the eastbound lanes of travel. The Clear Creek County Sheriff’s Office was responding to assist Idaho Springs when the vehicle almost struck a deputy's vehicle, according to CSP.
