1:43Now PlayingA pilot died when his firefighting aircraft went down in a reservoir while fighting the Gold Mountain Fire in southwestern Colorado Sunday evening, the Gunnison County Sheriff's Office said.
The sheriff's office said around 5:15 p.m., emergency dispatchers received a call about an aircraft down in Silver Jack Reservoir. The helicopter was "engaged in firefighting operations with the Gold Mountain Fire," the sheriff's office said.
The Montrose County Sheriff's Office dive team recovered the pilot's body, the Gunnison County Sheriff's Office said.
In an update Monday, the sheriff's office identified the pilot as Nicholas Dale, 56, of Sooke, British Columbia.
Dale is the fourth firefighter killed battling Colorado wildfires in the past month. Three federal wildland firefighters — Sydney Watson, 27, Nick Hutcherson, 27, and Emily Barker, 38 — died June 27 in a burnover on the Snyder Fire in Mesa County. Two others were injured.
Gov. Jared Polis' office said Dale was a federal contracted fire aviation pilot who was assigned to the Gold Mountain Fire.
