The San Miguel County Sheriff's Office shared on Facebook Thursday that dispatch had received a call reporting smoke near Dolores Peak, about 15 miles southwest of Telluride, at 3:22 p.m. Minutes after that, the sheriff's office said, Denver Air Traffic Control informed dispatch of a missing single-engine plane. The sheriff's office said it had not verified that the missing aircraft was the source of the smoke.
Just after 7 p.m., the sheriff's office confirmed that a single-engine aircraft had crashed near Dolores Peak and said they were inserting teams via helicopter to determine if there were survivors.
At about 10:40 a.m., the sheriff's office reported that there were two people onboard and determined there were no survivors of the crash. Search and Rescue teams will return to the scene Friday for recovery efforts, the sheriff's office said.
