When we need to look at the impact on trade of various events and policies, we can look at the volumes of goods passing through our ports. Brexit caused a huge drop in British port activity once it was clear we were headed for a hard brexit. It has dropped during covid as well, and continued to drop this year when other countries were recovering from the pandemic. Even the forecast, which predicts a bounce back, does not show us getting back up to pre-brexit levels of trade.
