as posted by the channelDr Navi Pillay was born in South Africa of Tamil, Indian descent. The daughter of a bus driver, she grew up on the losing side of the racist apartheid structures of white rule.
But Navi Pillay not only managed to study law, she became the first South African to earn a doctorate in Law from Harvard. For years, she fought the apartheid system in the courts, and when that system fell with the election in 1994, new president Nelson Mandela personally named her as the first non-white member of the South African Supreme Court. She nominates that as the year that made her.
