What you’ll need:
Terracotta pots
Child-friendly, runny acrylic poster paints
Clear sealant spray, rated for outdoor use
Two lengths of wood to rest the pots on (same width)
Masking tape
Gloves
Old newspapers or dropsheets
What you do:
Cover your work surface with the dropsheets or newspaper.
Lay down the bits of timber parallel on top of the paper and rest the pots upside-down on top – this allows excess paint to drip off without the pots sticking to the paper.
Use the masking tape to cover up the drainage holes so the paint doesn’t drip through.
Now start dripping the paint down the upside-down pots so it dribbles down the sides. Get creative with colour combinations and patterns.
When you’re finished, it’s a good idea to move the pots down the wood a little so you get a clean edge to the rims. The pots will take about two days to dry, depending on the weather and how thick the paint is.
When dry, remove the masking tape from the base and seal the pots inside and out with the spray sealant; this job should be done by adults.
While Caitlin and Ollie are working, Costa makes a surprise visit, bringing two geranium plants with bright red flowers for them to pot up. Other options include some summer herbs the family can harvest, or a tough indoor plant.
