Former Port Lincoln Mayor Peter Davis has toiled away on his island making a living from sheep farming.
His boat, the Investigator, was a regular site moored in Boston Bay as he commuted to Port Lincoln weekly during his 15 years as mayor and 30 years on the Port Lincoln Council.
He was a sometimes controversial community leader, labelling himself “The Mad Mayor”.
But now he’s being viewed as an unlikely ecological warrior.
Since he took over the island in the early 1960s from his father Hugh, who ran cattle stations in the Northern Territory, Peter Davis started planting trees to make up for the ones his family and others before them had bulldozed, ripped out or burnt.
The island was suffering from salinity, sand drift and a lack of water. At one stage Mr Davis was carting town drinking water to the island.
He’s set to retire when he turns 80 in mid June and leaves behind a legacy of a greener island with a secure water supply.
