On June 3, 1992, the High Court handed down its decision on Mabo v Queensland (No 2), the landmark case known as Mabo, in which people from the Torres Strait island of Mer fought to establish their traditional ownership of the Murray Islands.
The High Court ruled that the doctrine of 'terra nullius' should not have been applied to Australia and that the common law of Australia would recognise native title.
Following the Mabo judgement, the Federal Parliament passed the Native Title Act 1993 which established a legal framework for native title claims throughout Australia.
