A near-death experience helped Stolen Generations descendent Felicity Chapman finally discover her heritage after a 50-year search – and now she’s helping others reconnect with culture.
With little more than backyard plants, the North Queensland woman is helping Indigenous communities revitalise ancient weaving practices.
The process of weaving and eco-dyeing has had a profound effect on Felicity and many other First Nations people who’ve been distanced from country and culture.
They say it takes them home.
Felicity Chapman founded Deadly Weavers after seeing the need for cultural learning within Indigenous communities, and she now uses leaves, vine and fruit to weave those new connections with mob.
