Darumbal elder Aunty Sally Vea Vea watches on with the spirits of her slain ancestors, hundreds of whom were massacred on and around the sacred central Queensland mountain in the early 1900s.
Every two years, Elders and the Gawula Aboriginal Land Trust invite the public to walk in their descendants footsteps.
More than 150 climbers completed the four-hour hike, climbing more than 350 metres above sea level for NAIDOC week. Gai-I is on private land between Yeppoon and Rockhampton.
But the rare experience will not be offered in the same way again.
