Leanne O’Neill’s life changed forever when a car accident left her with no function below her belly button.
She’s one of 20,000 Australians who live with devastating consequences of spinal cord injury.
Aged 20 when she was told she would never walk again, Ms O’Neill suffered the double blow of seeing her leg muscles wither away.
And she has spent the past 37 years covering her legs.
But Ms O’Neill could achieve some quality of life, thanks to a Rockhampton innovator and CQUniversity neurological physiotherapy lecturer, Dr Vanesa Bochzenanian, who has developed a new bionic treatment.
This electronic stimulation mobility treatment, which aims to build muscle and improve circulation, is in its testing phase and Dr Bochzenanian hopes to get it into the homes of people living with disability.
