Dedicated volunteers are helping keep the Port Macquarie Anglican Soup Kitchen running, sometimes serving more than 300 meals a week.
They say demand has surged in the past six months, with many now facing increased financial pressures and rent increases.
Among those helping create the meals is a formerly homeless chef, Ross Matthews, who used to receive meals from the soup kitchen and says he’s keen to ‘pay back’.
Elsewhere, a resident in the Port Macquarie hinterland is growing extra fruit and vegetables in an expansive garden to ensure the soup kitchen has a steady supply of fresh produce.
They say the soup kitchen is providing both food and social connections for those in need.
