For others, it's the gurgle of floodwater as it swallowed homes.
For Lismore composer and multi-instrumentalist Tilly Jones it's an orchestral piece that captures the heartbreak, heroism and hope of the disaster, in a moving soundscape.
The performance of that piece heralded the return of music to the Northern Rivers Conservatorium in Lismore, where hundreds of instruments were destroyed by floodwater.
They have since been replaced through the generosity of countless strangers via a program called Resound that distributes donated instruments to areas struck by natural disasters.
