A 20-year project to revitalise the once-banned traditional language of the NSW south coast is stepping out of the classroom and onto country.
At the Jigamy keeping place near Eden, cultural educator Nathan Lygon and language program coordinator Sue Norman have developed Yanda Biratj ('Walk and Talk'), taking students and educators on a walk through the landscape, speaking in language as they share their observations and insights into seasonal changes and the cultural uses of flora and fauna.
It is the latest development in a project that began with elders Beryl Cruse, Liddy Stewart, Ossie Cruse and Shirley Aldridge visiting families along the NSW south coast to record spoken language. Together with recordings held at Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies, they were able to create a database of over 1,400 words, and developed teaching materials after consultation with a wider group from the Eden Indigenous community.
