Dr Maddy McAllister calls herself the shipwreck mermaid.
She spends much of her time underwater, scuba diving into the deep to uncover archaeological artefacts, carefully excavating and caring for the precious objects she finds.
These include a rope, left perfectly coiled on the ocean floor for more than 200 years, or a ginormous, steel laundry tap.
Maddy doesn't think of it as collecting buried treasure.
In her mind, these artefacts lend themselves to a better understanding of the lives, ambitions, and daily drudgery of those who disappeared beneath the depths.
