Dr Samantha Nixon used to be an arachnophobe — the kind who would be in the corner shivering and trying not to cry if a spider was on the loose in the same room.
She still has some of that fear inside her, but every day she has to push it away, as she reaches into click-top tupperware containers without any gloves, to handle funnel webs, tarantulas and trapdoor spiders.
Samantha is a venom scientist at the University of Queensland and catches, cares for and milks her own spiders.
She specialises in spider venoms for drug discovery, to treat epilepsy, stroke and for use in painkillers.
