Max Limpus, 10, and Thelma Eiseman, 104, have been best friends since enjoying a relaxing trishaw ride together along the seafront.
They met at Cycling Without Age Yeppoon, a volunteer-run initiative where seniors, and people with mobility issues, are taken for a ride on a specially designed three-wheeled bike.
Community captain Mary O’Donnell says Max and Thelma’s friendship is just one of many forged through the initiative. For retirees Keith McLaughlin, 84, and Estelle, 79, the regular outings are “a highlight of our existence”.
The rides have helped them feel less isolated, particularly while recovering from serious health problems and coping with personal loss amid the pandemic.
