They were Indonesian fishermen whose vessel had run aground on Bedwell Island, after being swept up in the category five Tropical Cyclone Ilsa.
Incredibly, the men had survived for six days without food or water, building a makeshift camp on what is little more than a desolate, exposed sand bar.
An emergency helicopter was dispatched from Broome, 300km away, and a race against time ensued to rescue the men.
This is the story of that extraordinary rescue from those involved.
