1:46Now PlayingAustralia’s early involvement in the Vietnam War was enormously popular. People loved the idea of sending young men to fight communism as the idea of the domino effect took hold. But there were some early pockets of dissent.
In 1964 the Australian Government introduced conscription for overseas service through a random birthday ballot and from 1965 to 1972, Australian troops, including conscripts, were sent to the Vietnam War
Over 60,000 Australians, including ground troops and air force and navy personnel, served in Vietnam; 523 died as a result of the war and almost 2,400 were wounded.
On August 18, 2023, Australia marks the 50th anniversary of the end of its involvement in the Vietnam War with a national service at the Australian Vietnam Forces National Memorial in Canberra.
