YouTube Description
as posted by the channelThe Shitbox Rally is a long-distance motoring event run in Australia as a fundraiser for cancer research, originally an annual event but increased to twice-yearly in 2019.
According to rally founder James Freeman participants have raised $47million since its inception, with the rally held as a reward for all their fundraising efforts.
“It began from loss,” he said. “I lost both my parents to cancer within 12 months of each other. I wanted to come up with something that honoured them.
Backroads travelled to the Gem Tree Roadhouse, a couple of kilometres outside of Alice Springs, in the Northern Territory, where Lisa Millar met up with brothers Lou and Peter Mimmo who are participating as a team.
Under the barrier of 'Warrior Princesses' Lou and Peter are decked out in tutus, tiaras and colourful nail polish, behind the wheel of a fabulous matching jalopy they acquired for less than $1,500.
“We've had an absolute bull,” says Peter. “This is both our first Shitbox Rally. For me, it's my first time I've been camping. As of last night, it was my first time in the NT. So, lots of firsts.”
The brothers are participating after Peter’s daughter Eliana was diagnosed back with leukemia, at the age of nine and a half years.
Eliana spent 184 nights in the Royal Children's Hospital in Melbourne, and it was during this time that Lou came up with the idea of doing a Shitbox Rally. Brother Lou put Peter into the rally as a surprise.
“The first thing he knew that we were doing the rally is when he got an email saying he'd been registered as a driver,” Lou says.
