The fallout over her anti-gay stance spawned a satirical top 10 single on the ARIA charts, and, just months later, made her the target of Mardi Gras' trademark political satire.
This float from the 1997 parade took aim at Hanson's claim that Mardi Gras promoted something "that is not natural", with the giant puppet head becoming an instant icon.
It was recreated a year later for Pauline Pantsdown's 1998 Sleaze Ball performance, in which Hanson's puppet head exploded on stage — it was the same night Hanson lost the seat of Blair in the federal election.
