About 3,500 straphangers had to be rescued after being trapped underground in the New York City subway for two hours, according to officials.

The incident occurred after a century-old electrical substation "had a fire and explosion of some kind because the door was off the hinges," MTA officials said.

New York Gov. Hochul has instructed the MTA and Con Edison to investigate the incident.
