He took 52 percent in the first round of voting on August 10, 14 points ahead of his nearest contender. Erdogan said he will increase the powers of the presidency, which until now has been a largely ceremonial role. Some in the opposition are worried that in his new role, Erdogan (and his AK Party) will become increasingly authoritarian. The day after his victory, AJ+ took to the streets of Istanbul and asked Turkish citizens what they had to say to their new president.
