Where would you find safety if your home was torched and armed men took everything you owned? In South Sudan, 1.8 million people have been displaced since Dec. 2013, when the political rivalry between South Sudan's president and his former VP exploded into fighting, deepening ethnic tensions across the world's newest country. To escape the violence, thousands of South Sudanese took refuge on a series of small islands isolated in the Nile River, where the waterway sustains and protects them. This is their story.
