Protesters calling for greater workers' rights tried to defy a ban by marching on Taksim Square in Istanbul, Turkey, and clashed briefly with police. The May Day protests, which have been violent in the past, came on International Workers' Day. Police used tear gas and water cannons. About 140 protesters were arrested.
