What will life be like if Roe v. Wade is overturned?

The Jane Collective, through their underground network, secretly helped 11,000 people get safe, free abortions before Roe v. Wade, the landmark abortion law that could soon be overturned. So AJ+ asked former members of the group, and the directors of a new documentary about them, what would happen if Roe is scrapped?

A draft opinion from the Supreme Court leaked on May 2 suggests the court plans to overturn Roe v. Wade. In the event that Roe is officially overturned, it could lead to states banning abortion and other rights protected by the 1973 decision. Multiple states already have laws in place that would ban abortion and take effect if Roe is officially overturned. And some states have passed new laws, seemingly in anticipation of the ruling.

In the 1950s and 1960s, an estimated 200,000 to 1.2 million illegal abortions were performed per year. Due to illegal abortions, many women would come into hospitals with severe infections or in septic shock, and many of them would die.

“The Janes” documentary comes out June 8 on HBO and HBO Max.
