Latinos have usually voted for Democrats, but that’s no longer a given. And some first-time Puerto Rican voters, like Gardner Mojica, are all in for Trump. On the day we spoke to him, he had just driven back from a rally six hours away selling Trump 2024 memorabilia. “We were better on the Trump,” Gardner says. “Work was better. Prices were definitely low.”
Recently there was significant migration into the state in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria in 2017, including Jaqueline Torres and her daughter. Jaqueline said she was disappointed with the Trump administration’s response to the hurricane. This election she’s canvassing for Kamala Harris.
Jaqueline says she’s not just voting for herself but for all the people back in Puerto Rico who can’t vote. “You have to go vote here,” she says. “So you can make a better life for them back there.”
