1) Ismail was a maternal grandson of Muhammad II through his daughter Fatima, hence he was the nephew of Muhammad III and Nasr. He was also a cousin of them through his father Faraj, the nephew of Muhammad I.
2) During the reigns of her grandsons, Muhammad IV and Yusuf I, Fatima bint Muhammad became a powerful political figure and wielded considerable influence comparable to Kosem Sultan in the later Ottoman Empire.
