The year was 1187. The king of Egypt and Syria, Salah ud-Din al-Ayyubi, had done the impossible; he had taken Jerusalem from the Christian Franks 88 years after it was first conquered by the Christians in the First Crusade. When Christians took over the holy city, there had been a blood bath; every Muslim and Jew in the city — and some Christians too — were massacred by the Crusaders. However, Salah ud-Din did not repeat history. He had been much more generous. There had been no bloodshed. But it didn’t quite matter. Jerusalem had fallen, and the Christian fortresses were dropping like flies. Something had to be done. After all, God willed it.
