Puerto Rico 🇵🇷: Did you know that in Puerto Rico the major political parties aren’t organized around Democratic or Republican or left/right? That’s just the start of a very deep and complex dive into the US Congressional Delegation trip to PR this week to examine the question of status determination.

I did something a little different in my stories about it this week. Given how distorted and under-discussed this issue is in the mainland US, I tried to share these issues with you from a more objective perspective *without* letting you know my opinions first, since so many of the basic facts aren’t even known and our goal for the CODEL is not to side with one or another but figure out what an objective decolonization process can even look like for the world’s oldest colony in the 21st century.

We talked Independence, Statehood, Colonization, Corruption, Taíno Native identity & US refusal to recognize it, Afro-Boricua culture, Act 60, Jones Act, displacement of Puerto Ricans by wealthy non-Boricuas, how wealthy people attempting to evade taxes are harming families and communities here, the diaspora, and more. I did my best but of course there is so much more to discuss and I encourage everyone to research more deeply.
