as posted by the channelLast week, on the anniversary of the Roe v. Wade decision, New York state enacted a new abortion law, called the Reproductive Health Act. A long-term goal of pro-choice advocates, the law was finally passed by the newly elected Democratic majority in the state senate and signed by Governor Andrew Cuomo.
Ahead of the final vote, Albany Bishop Edward B. Scharfenberger issued an open letter to Governor Cuomo published on the website of Albany's diocesan newspaper.
The bishop urged Governor Cuomo not to let the bill, which he called a “Death Star” and described as “extreme,” become law and he warned that he and many fear it will lead to the determination that one day “being pro-life” will be “a hate crime in the state of New York.”
Today, Bishop Scharfenberger joins America associate editor Ashley Mckinless for a discussion on what the new law means for Catholics.
