While the 911 attacks in themselves didn't substantially change anything in the real world, like the nuclear bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki did. They were symbolically powerful and provided the justification for war in many peoples minds.
They clouded peoples minds to the good and peaceful ways to solving problems. The facts became obscured, like that Islamic people comprise more than 20% of the world's population, but have less than 5% of its wealth.
They frightened a majority of Americans and many other people into trusting and believing in the few individuals with extraordinary power and wealth, that good would come from preemptive wars initiated by the most powerful nation in the world.
Now after a decade of ceaseless horrors graphically and instantly portrayed 24/7 by the news media, I doubt few can imagine the world otherwise.
