Adam Schiff, the chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, said the State Department is withholding information after it barred a U.S. envoy from testifying before House lawmakers. Gordon Sondland, the U.S. ambassador to the EU, was part of text messages discussing a potential deal between President Donald Trump and Ukraine’s president to investigate a company linked to the son of 2020 political rival Joe Biden. Schiff said Sondland has provided the State Department additional text messages that could shed light on the issue, but those messages are being withheld. “The failure to produce this witness, the failure to produce these documents, we consider yet additional strong evidence of obstruction of the constitutional functions of Congress,” Schiff told reporters.
